The Blog

As you may know, we have been running our Christmas open mic competition, where three open mic acts will perform at The People's Choice next week Wednesday. We had some great entries, and have whittled it down to the best four. We now need YOU to help us decide which three should go through to the show.

The open mic entrants are below. Simply click on their names to watch their videos, and then vote using the 'vote now' link! Voting ends on Sunday 13th December at midnight!

NB: You can still get your hands on tickets online for The People's Choice, 16th December at Lost Theatre. Click here.

As you may or may not know, we have our Christmas Charity Special event taking place on the 16th December, at Lost Theatre in Vauxhall. This event is known as The People's Choice, as the line up is selected by our audience via online voting. In previous years, acts such as George The Poet, JP Cooper, Nick Brewer, Dionne Reid, Nego True and Rachel Kerr have all been voted for and performed at The People's Choice. This year, voting took place in early November, and as you can see above, the six acts have been chosen, along with our special guest, Suli Breaks.

In addition to this, we run The People's Choice Open Mic Competition, whereby we accept entries from up and coming performers, who would like to grace the stage in December. If you are interested in getting involved, here's how it works:

  1. Send us a 60 second video clip of your poetry, rap or singing to teamvocalsandverses@gmail.com - this can either be via a YouTube link or a video attached to the email.
  2. Deadline to send in your open mic entry is Monday 7th December.
  3. We will review all entries and select the best six.
  4. The best six entries will be put up for public vote online, and the three acts with the most votes will be invited to perform a two-minute piece each at The People's Choice on the 16th December.
  5. On the night, the audience will decide who they feel is the best act, and that act will be invited to perform a full set at our Valentine's Special in February 2016.

Previous Christmas open mic winners include Keziah Who (who is now one of our main acts for this show), JayO and Michael Kilbey. Get involved ASAP, as the deadline for entries is fast approaching!

And if you don't have your ticket for The People's Choice, what are you waiting for?! Get them here.

We kicked off this year with our Valentine's Special, which took place on Monday at Bedroom Bar in Shoreditch. The compact, candlelit upstairs area of the venue provided the perfect location for what was a beautifully intimate evening of poetry and live music.

First act on stage was last year's Christmas Special open mic winner, Michael Kilbey. Hailing from Hertfordshire, the singer performed some of his original material, accompanied by the acoustic sounds of his guitar.

Next up was spoken word artist, Jolade, gracing our stage for the second time in just under a year with fantastic pieces, which provoked rapturous finger-snaps amongst our audience. He was also joined by fellow poet, Sia, and the duo performed a hard-hitting poem called "Find Yourself".

Our very own founder and host, Benjamin Bennett, provided us with a rare performance of a romantically-charged poem called 'Tell Me'. He was joined by the amazing voice of singer Elizabeth, as she and the band laced his piece with a soulful rendition of the legendary 'Prototype' by Outkast.

After an entertaining round of our signature competition, 'Verse-Off', and our usual open mic section, our next billed artist for the night was singer EJR, who gave us a lively mix of originals and well-known R&B hits such as 'Love' by Musiq Soulchild, and Michael Jackson's 'Rock With You'. He was accompanied by the band and his three fantastically harmonious backing vocalists, (one of which was V&V favourite, Shanteh Fuller) who had the whole venue buzzing from beginning to end.

Our penultimate act was New York-native Amy Leon, who lit up the stage with that scintillating style of US spoken word we Brits are mesmerised by. In addition to a powerful lyrical performance, her use of a loop-pedal on stage gave her set that creative edge, which the audience warmly embraced.

Our last act, was none other than Sincerely Wilson, who hadn't performed at V&V since April 2012. The soulful crooner gave us the most heartfelt singing performance of the night, with stripped down versions of original tracks from his 'Painted In Silence' and 'Tone Of Art' EPs, as well as an awesome cover of India Arie's 'Beautiful Surprise'.
